You don’t need an elaborate set to photograph your dollhouse miniatures. A simple backdrop, a printed ground scene and a handful of little props can make your miniature world feel surprisingly real.
For this fish photo, the beach in the background is simply a page from last year’s calendar. Place the page upright behind your miniatures, then print a sandy background to lay flat in front of it. Let the two scenes meet behind your subject, keeping that join out of the frame if you can.
Build a little story around your subject
Choose a few objects that belong in the scene. Because we’re photographing fish, try miniature buckets, a fishing rod and a tiny knife. You can even make a fisherman’s net from the mesh bag that oranges come in: paint the netting brown, let it dry, and hang it loosely across the background. Real sand and a few tiny shells will add to the scene.
Arrange the fish at the front and keep the extra props slightly behind them. A few well-chosen details are enough; leave room for the fish to be the star of the photograph.
Take the photograph
Set the scene near a window for soft natural light. Bring your camera or phone down to the miniature’s level, tap the fish to focus, and move closer until the backdrop fills the frame. Take a few photos while shifting the props or camera angle slightly. That’s it: an old calendar page, a printed patch of sand and a handful of tiny finds can become a whole seaside scene.
