Ponies and Horses have made a comeback to Sylvania - but how their status has evolved
In the past the ponies and horses in Sylvania were well-loved, but didn't have the most illustrious of occupations. Paid with hay, apples and a rub on the nose, they willingly pulled along market carts, gypsy caravans or icecream carts, despite being saddled with most of the daily burdens in village life. They were the means of transport for the more enviable Sylvanians, dressed in their best market day clothes, who rode around in pony traps.
Relegated to a lesser status than the job-holding, well-clothed, house-dwelling Sylvanian townsfolk, the Sylvanian horses and ponies never complained. They were happy to help, use their strength and size, bearing the burden for townsfolk, as was the expected social order in the Sylvania of their era. Other Sylvanians used their talent, intelligence and wit to hold down important positions in the village, perhaps to become mayor, or postman, or the village baker, while the Sylvanian pony contentedly lowered his head, pulled his weight and placidly submitted to the directions of his owner.
Whether it was pulling the Sylvanian along in their cart for an afternoon picnic in the countryside. The Sylvanians sat back in style, enjoying the view while the pony did all the work!
Or Dapple, the trusty grey and white horse in charge of pulling Penleigh Buttercup's cart full of fruit and veggies to and from market every day.
Bramble the pony who pulled Patrick and Mildred Underwood Badger's gypsy cart without complaint. It was a pretty amazing cart. I dare say he was probably quite proud to be attached to it.
By 2010, change was on it's way
In 2010, The Sylvanian Show Jumping Set was released in time for the London Olympics. Jester the pony, ridden by Kirstie Hamilton Hamster wowed us all with their talent!
Then the Equine Equality Act was introduced in Sylvania in 2022, making all Sylvanian occupations and workplaces equal and fair.
Today Mrs Serafina Manely runs the local Sylvanian Hair Salon. Horses and ponies in Sylvania have achieved equality in the workplace, often self-employed, or in managerial positions.
Mrs Manely's daughter Bella and fellow-pony Giselle, are greatest of friends, and love dressing up, trying out new hairstyles and spending time in the hair salon - a far cry from the days of being relegated to pulling a cart, bearing the weight of 7 or 8 Sylvanian townsfolk.
"We feel we have achieved equality and freedom of choice in our generation" Bella states. " We can enjoy all this today thanks to the bravery and courage of our Sylvanian pony ancestors who finally put their hooves down and said Neigh to the status quo"
Though there is no official record of it, this social revolution is believed to have happened somewhere between 2012 and 2022, as there were no Sylvanian Horse sets released during this time as the manufacturers may have feared the ponies unbridled push for equality would stirrup trouble)
